A timeout from storytelling to address something important. I enjoy being a member of the blogsphere. I really do. I’ve seen much in the year and half I’ve been doing this every day that entertains me, informs me and gives me pause for thought. Those are the good things about blogging, and using Alphainventions, Blogiche and Blog Surfer to promote my writing and discover other talent.
Then there are the things that annoy me. Get rich quick scammers, mindless fashion crap, porn sites masquerading as art, glorification of warfare and let’s not forget the survivalists, possibly the most delusional of all. Those things I can ignore. They are inevitable and overall they do little damage.
But there are sites much more damaging than those. I’m talking about the fear and hate mongers, whose number seems to increase with each passing month. You all know the ones I’m talking about. I won’t name them.
I’m talking about the political sites, many of whom not only drape the red, white and blue around their shoulders to give themselves what they falsely believe to be an air of dignity, but also bring religion into their maelstrom of hate.
What I see happening in America right now is every bit as ugly and loathsome as the Islamic extremists who spew their venom at the rest of the world. Here’s a plain and simple fact that can be verified by even the most cursory examination of history – those who trade in fear and hatred do so for one reason and one reason only – to try and keep everyone around them deaf and blind to the true nature of their agenda. No need to think for yourselves! We’ll tell you what’s happening! Be afraid, be very, very afraid! Your liberties are under attack! It’s disgusting.
Make no mistake; these vendors of negativity have no answers to the imaginary problems they bellow about. Their stock in trade is lies, half-truths, character assassination, and the wielding of words they don’t even know the actual definitions of, such as Socialism and Communism.
It should be obvious to anyone who lived through the 50’s and 60’s that the bugaboo of Communism is once again being raised to keep us all in line just as they used it back then. The Cold War was nothing more than a scam used to keep the American people afraid. Remember the Domino Theory? It was used to justify the incursion into Vietnam. These same ones spewing their propaganda now were the ones swearing that if Vietnam fell to the Communists the rest of the world would follow. Well, it did and the rest didn’t. Don’t hear them talking about that anymore, do you?
Fear is a very useful tool for assuring meekness folks. It’s been used all through history and is being used far more than ever today, most especially by the neo-cons who, day after day regale us with their paranoid ranting as the rest of us offer creativity and wit to the blogosphere while they can find nothing better to do with their time than call for armed insurrection against a democratically elected government and then call themselves “true patriots”. One of the survivalist groups that supports the Tea Party movement greatly admires Timothy McVeigh, the man who famously said that the children he murdered when he blew up the Oklahoma City federal building were just “collateral damage”. A child murderer, that’s someone they look up to. People are known by the company they keep.
I am so very tired of it and I find it’s time to stand up and say so. America is abhorred by the rest of the world when they see this venal barrage being spewed at them by these hate mongers. I say shame on them. No good has EVER come from trading in snake oil and wolf tickets.
I leave you with the words of the great 18th century Conservative statesman Edmund Burke:
Toleration is good for all, or it is good for none.
Whenever a separation is made between liberty and justice, neither, in my opinion, is safe.
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
He would not have approved of what Conservatism has devolved into in America.
Remember well, pointing the finger at others and spewing hatred and intolerance over and over was how Adolph Hitler came to power in Germany. Sinclair Lewis was right; it can happen anywhere. If Fascism overtakes America it will be draped in the flag and carrying a cross. Bet on it.
