Shelter From The Storm – Part 7

The next morning Jeremy was awake early. He lay in bed for a while and thought about the things he had seen and read the night before. He looked out the window at the storm and noticed it seemed to be lessening. That lifted his spirits as it looked as though this would be his last day in the house. He was itching to get to California. He showered and went to the kitchen where Maude was busy preparing breakfast.

“Well young man you’re up early. Breakfast will be ready soon. Pancakes sound good?”

“Yum. I can’t wait.”

She poured him a glass of milk and went back to her preparations. He sensed a change in the air and wondered what was going on.

“How are you this morning? Did you sleep well?”

She didn’t answer straight away and when she did she kept her back turned to him.

“Oh, I suppose. Just have some things on my mind I guess. The weather’s still bad.”

“Yeah, but it looks like it might clear by tomorrow. I’m thinking I should get on the road if it does.”

She stopped what she was doing for a moment and then resumed. “Well, if that’s what you want to do.” She but down her knife and turned to him. “I love having you here Jeremy.”

He blushed and was momentarily tongue-tied. She smiled at him and went back to making breakfast. Soon after they were eating. Again he was amazed at what a good cook she was. When they were done he cleared t he table and began doing dishes. She remained sitting apparently deep in though.

“What’s up Maude?”

“Oh, nothing. Just thinking about things I need to do soon.”

“Is it about your club or whatever you call it?”

She gave him a quizzical look. “Now why would you think that?”

His face fell as he realized his faux pas. “Um…don’t know. Don’t mean to pry.” He turned back to the dishes but he could feel her eyes on him. When he was done he asked her if there were any more chores he could do for her.

“You could bring in some more firewood for tonight” she told him. “It’s going to be cold I hear.”

He went out and got the firewood when he was done and when he came back in she had the phone in her bedroom again. He crept up to her door and listened.

“Yes tonight is the time…okay, I know…don’t worry, just be ready…make the preparations and I’ll take care of things on this end…all right, see you then.”

He scurried to his room as he heard her hang up. She came out a few minutes later and saw him reading.

“Thanks for bringing in the firewood Jeremy. Listen, I have to go into town and pick up a few things. Would you like to go with me?”

“No, I think I’ll just hang out here and read if you don’t mind.”

“Okay. I’ll be back soon. Would you like a steak for dinner? I’m in the mood for one.”

“Sounds great.”

When he heard the car pull out of the drive he went to the window and watched her drive away. The phone conversations fascinated him. What was going on? Tonight is the time? Time for what he wondered? Was she going out? He wondered when she’d mention it if she was. Maybe she was going to a witch’s meeting, whatever they were called.

He remembered she had a calendar on the wall in the kitchen. He went and had a look to see if there might be a clue there. There didn’t seem to be anything significant about the date. It was a Friday. He was about to turn away when he saw the phases of the moon in the corner above.

This particular Friday was a full moon.
